A friend of mine informed me that the Crocker Art Museum had started a new tradition and played the Sound of Music movie every year the day after Christmas in their theater. Not only was it just playing the movie, but they closed captioned it so the words and song lyrics were up on the screen and everyone that attended sang along to the songs as they played.
Alana and I love the Sound of Music, so I got us tickets and she and I had a little girls night out.
Seating wasn't assigned, and we arrived early, so we got seats all the way in the back and snapped some "usies".
I love time with my girl.
Before the movie started, they held a costume contest (which we knew nothing about). There were people dresses as nuns, some people dresses as some of the kids in the movie and there was even someone dressed as a bee. (from the song "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" - when the dog bites...when the bee stings.) The people running the event had the audience vote on the best costumes and the top three won prizes (passes to come back to the museum with their families and such)
After the costume contest, the hosts went over these little paper bags that people had purchased. Inside each one there were items that related to the movie. A small bundle of adelvice, a little hat like the boys wore in the movie when they were out and about, a whistle and a little paper on a stick that said one of the 7 notes in the "Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti" song.
The purpose behind these items was that you were supposed to take them out and use them during that song or part of the movie. So when the captain blows his whistle, you blow yours. When your note (printed on your flag) came up during the song, you lifted/waved your flag. When the captain/Maria sang Adelvice, you held up your bundle. They also told us that when you saw the baroness, you were supposed to hiss like a snake. You could whistle when Maria and the captian kiss, you could boo when you see an Austrian flag or when you see Rolfe after he's a jerk to Liesl. It sounded kinda weird to us since we had never been, but we rolled with it. They had extra bags of goodies that no one purchased so they walked around and gave them to kids that didn't have one. So, Alana got one.
Then they started the movie. People even pretended to sing along and chirp in the beginning when it was just instrumental stuff and right before Maria started singing on the hill.
As the movie went on, Alana and I got more and more comfortable and we started reading the words aloud as they came up on the screen, or as we knew them. By intermission, our faces hurt so much because we were smiling and laughing as the movie went on.
We decided then and there that we would make this a yearly tradition for the two of us. We can't wait to go again and again and share the fun of it with others!
